Charlyne Yi is a love skeptic intrigued by the mythology surrounding the subject. To quench her curiosity, Charlyne has enlisted her good friend Nicholas to direct a cross-country endeavour to document the stories, theories and advice about the one subject she fully doesn't understand: love. She speaks to bikers, young couples, older couples, romance novelists, children and professors each offering a different perspective of the multi-faceted entity that morphs and applies itself in different ways.
As filming ensues, a relationship between Charlyne (plays herself) and Michael Cera (plays himself, rumored to be dating Charlyne in real life) starts to bloom, threading another piece of complexity into Charlyne's perception of love.
Paper Heart blurs the line between an actual documentary and the scripted part of the movie and takes a fresh approach to a highly over-interpreted concept in Hollywood. Yi has a bashful, subtle likability to her akin to the self-effacing musings of Michael Cera. Overall I felt the film was sweet, silly, quirky, inventive and touching. Some parts felt like untied loose ends albeit done on purpose. It wasn't deeply insightful or as engaging as some might like, but I don't think it ever sought out to be.
